Why is blonde hair more expensive?

Blonde or brunette?
There has always been a strong interest in the noticeable differences between these two types of women, not only with regard to their hair colour but their character as well, along with their attitude and style of femininity, not to mention the various theories and convictions on the subject which have worked their way into men’s fantasies in the course of time.

So, how can we contribute to the discussion?

Let’s start from a basic fact: only 2% of the world’s population is naturally blonde.
We have no intention of expressing a preference in one way or another since it is our firm belief that every woman is beautiful in her own unique way, but if you have made the renowned musical “Men prefer blondes” your creed, this post is for you.

On our market – that of hair extensions – it is practically impossible to find high quality hair in light colours, particularly very long hair… but how come?
Well….are there not enough girls in Scandinavian countries willing to cut their hair for those of us wishing to become “the next blond bombshell”? Unfortunately not.

Where the hair comes from

I wish to be frank with this disclaimer:)

All the hair extensions available in shades of light brown and blond (light, dark, platinum) come from black or dark brown hair sourced in Asia, particularly in India and China or neighbouring countries such as Kazakhstan, Mongolia or Uzbekistan.
(Especially in India, many women cut their hair for religious reasons, but that’s another story….)

This is the pure unadorned truth! There is no light blonde European virgin hair on the hair extension market… or rather, it does not exist on a medium-large scale… even in the top quality hair range. Unless of course your name is Britney and you are out to spend thousands of Euros for a complete extension…

So, back to us….if the original hair is dark, how do we obtain light-coloured hair while preserving its structure and quality intact?
The only way to make dark hair turn a very light blonde is to decolourize it.

Decolourization

Decolourization is an irreversible process of hair depigmentation.
The depigmentation process impoverishes skin and hair melanin.
In the case of hair, this operation sets out to remove the pigments responsible for conferring colour.
Various substances may be used to carry out this operation, but the most common of all is peroxide.
To put it in simple terms, such substances penetrate the hair structure and gradually destroy melanin.
Once deprived of melanin, hair becomes yellowish, just as it does with ageing. Now it is possible to dye the decolourized hair to whatever shade is required.
When hair is treated in this way, it becomes extremely porous, which facilitates the absorption of any substance coming into contact with it.
When decolourization is carried out too frequently or with excessively “aggressive” methods, it can lead to the total destruction of the hair structure, which then starts to become dry and brittle.

What type of hair lends itself to decolourization?

Now that you have learned something about hair extensions, you will be wondering which hair types have what it takes to become your next platinum blonde hair extension… and above all… at what price?
Let’s proceed step by step…….

The main requisites for obtaining blonde hair without undermining its high quality are the following:

1_ The hair used must be virgin
…..that is to say, it has never been coloured or decolourized previously
2_ It must be cut so that all hair strands stay aligned in their natural direction from the root to the tip (Remy)
In this way, all the hair follicles (technically called cuticles) will lie in the same direction.

3_ It must be thick
Excessively fine hair may not be suitable for undergoing heavy lightening processes.

4_ Age and health of the donor

The donor and… her hair in particular must be in tip top condition to undergo the depigmentation (decolourization) process.

And last but not least….. drum roll

The cost

If you have read this article from start to finish, you will already have an inkling of why blonde hair extensions are more expensive.
The process required to obtain them is longer than that of darker colours, so the cost of labour is a component impacting price but, above all, the original hair must be of truly high quality if we want our extensions to stay soft, beautiful and manageable for longer.
Obviously, the same applies to darker colours but it must be remembered that the hair used to make platinum hair extensions has undergone a longer and more aggressive treatment than darker ones. This is why the hair used for extensions in light colours has slightly higher prices.

Conclusion

Ladies and gentlemen….if you browse the web you will of course be able to find extensions of all colours at the same price which would indicate one of the following possibilities:
a) the quality of the hair is not so high as they would have you believe
b) the extensions in medium or dark colours are more expensive than their actual quality would justify
c) the higher cost of blonde and platinum hair has been spread over the other products
